Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) destroy cells of thyroid gland and cause hypothyroidism. Thyroglobulin antibodies (ATA) prevent formation of thyroid hormone leading to hypothyroidism. Thyroid antibodies test measure both Anti TPO & ATA. They are an important tool for doctors and patients when it comes to diagnosing and monitoring diseases related to the thyroid. TPO and ATG are used to measure levels of thyroid antibody proteins in the blood. These can indicate various thyroid problems. TPO and ATG are the most commonly tested for and will tell the doctor if the patient has an autoimmune condition or a problem with the actual thyroid gland.
