Overview

What is a Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) Test ?

Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) is blood test done to detect the presence of cancer in the human body. The CEA test is mainly used to detect the recurrence of colorectal cancer. Some other cancer types with higher CEA are pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and thyroid cancer. CEA is a type of protein that is found in the tissue of a baby in the womb and disappears over a period of time. Smokers may have slightly higher CEA levels that is the reason you need to quit smoking for a few days before going for the test.

What does the CEA test measure?

The CEA test measures the amount of CEA glycoprotein in the blood. CEA levels of more than 2.5 suggest presence of cancer in the body.

CEA test could be prescribed by the doctor if the patient is having following symptoms:

  • A persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation
