Dengue is a mosquito borne disease that is caused by dengue virus which is transmitted to humans by bite of a mosquito. Dengue NS1 test is done to check for the dengue infection in the blood. The test is most effective when done within 9 days of the onset of fever. However, from day 3 to day 7 is a critical period when few patients may develop severe dengue which can be life threatening. There are 4 types of dengue infection of which the hemorrhagic stream is the most dangerous. In this type of dengue infection, platelets tend to fall very rapidly. When the platelet count falls below 10000 then internal hemorrhages occur which is life threatening. If dengue test is found positive then regular CBC should be done to check the level of platelets. If the platelets fall below 20000 then platelet transfusion might be needed to prevent internal hemorrhages.
