Overview

What is Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) Test ?

The kidneys remove excess fluid and waste materials by a filtration process known as Glomerular filtration. It is a calculation of the rate that determines the efficiency of the filtration process, thus helping measure kidney functioning and to determine the stage of the chronic kidney disease. At times a person who is a kidney patient and needs to undergo a contrast CT Scan or MRI Scan, GFR rate becomes very important. If your GFR is very low then you cannot undergo a contrast study.

Reported Parameters

  1. The normal level of GFR is considered at 60 or above
  2. A below 60 GFR test result may indicate kidney-related diseases
  3. A below 15 GFR test results may indicate severe kidney failure
