Overview

What is Montoux Test ?

TB is an infectious and contagious sickness that affects your lungs. It can also spread to other regions of the body, such as the brain or spine. It is caused by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A Mantoux test is effective in screening for TB. The interpretation of this test is based on determining the presence or absence of the amount of localised swelling. It is used to see if a person has established an immune response to the bacterium that causes TB.

At Maurya Labs, Mantoux Test is done for Rs. 120 and the report is made available within 48 hours once the skin patch is examined by the doctor. The patient has to come to the lab on the completion of 48 hours for doctor examination of the patch.

Reported Parameters

Your test results usually mention the diameter of the induration (localised swelling at the test site). The reference range of the induration is 0-15 millimeters at an increment of 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm. An induration size of more than 15 mm is considered positive in a normal patient. A swelling of less than 4 mm is considered negative.

What does the Montoux Test measure?

Mantoux test checks whether a person is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Why should I do the Montoux Test?

Your doctor will recommend you to take the Mantoux  test, if you have following symptoms:

  • Night sweats, unexplained weight loss, tiredness
  • Fever, loss of appetite, cough that lasts for a long time
  • Bloodstained sputum, laboured breathing
  • Chest discomfort, coughing up blood
  • Cough that has lasted for more than three weeks
How is the Montoux Test done?

During the test, a small amount of PPD tuberculin is injected into the skin of your forearm. A small, firm red bump will form within 48 to 72 hours at the injection site if you already have a latent tuberculosis infection. If you have a severe skin reaction, you may require a chest X-ray to determine whether you have active tuberculosis. You will not react to the Mantoux test if you do not have an infection.
