Overview

What is Thyroid Function Test

Thyroid Function Test in Purnea at Maurya Labs is done to measure the amount of Thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the neck region and produces Thyroxine hormone and Triiodothyronine hormone. This test is done if the patient has symptoms like tiredness all the time, body fatigue, weight gain, irritability etc. The test is used to diagnose diseases like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, graves’ disease or hashimoto’s disease. The test has three components :

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – This is not produced by the thyroid gland. TSH gets produced by the Pituitary Gland in the brain. This acts like a switch for the thyroid gland. Once TSH is released in the blood, it wakes up the thyroid gland which then produces T3 and T4.

Tryiodothyronine (T3) – This is one of the two hormones produced by the thyroid gland. The main function of both these hormones is to warm up your muscles which then burn sugar to produce energy and you become active. Patients who have low levels of T3 and T4 will feel lethargic.

Thyroxine (T4) – This is the second hormone produced by the thyroid gland. This is more important than T3 as most of the T3 hormone gets produced by T4 only. Patients with low levels of thyroid hormone are advised to take medication which is actually thyroxine hormone.

Reported Parameters

  1. T3 – Triiodothyronine
  2. T4 – Thyroxine
  3. TSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone

What is Thyroid Function Test ?

Thyroid Function Test at Purnea in Maurya Labs is a blood test done to measure the levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) which is produced by the Pituitary Gland in your brain. It also measures the levels of thyroid hormones like Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). These tests can tell you if you have conditions like hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

What does the Thyroid Function test measure?

Thyroid Function Test measures the levels of :

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – If the levels of TSH are low but still the levels of T3 and T4 are normal then you do not have the problem of thyroid and should not take any medication. However if the levels of T3 and T4 are low then medication might be required but only on the advice of your doctor. Some patients would have a higher than normal value for TSH and are advised to take thyroxine medicine which is also not correct. Higher value for TSH but normal values for T3 and T4 also indicate that you do not have a problem with your thyroid gland. TSH is a hormone released by the brain to activate the thyroid gland which in turn produces thyroid hormones.

Triiodothyronine (T3) – This is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland which is used to warm your muscles and burn sugar in those muscles which keeps you active.

Thyroxine (T4) – This is more important than T3 and is also produced by the thyroid gland which is situated in the neck region. The function of this hormone is also to warm up your muscles. Most of the T3 in our body is also produced from T4.

How is the Thyroid Function test done?

How often Thyroid Hormone levels should be checked?

Thyroid hormone levels may be checked every three months until a person with abnormal thyroid function reaches the treatment goals.

Your doctor may prescribe thyroxin medicine to correct the thyroid function and advise lifestyle modifications like more exercise into your daily routine. Once you are doing regular exercises, the medicine dose can be reduced after repeating the thyroid function test. You may be completely off the medicine once full effects of your exercise regime are attained.
